This pair of giant sunspots on our local star was captured June 28, 2026 using a solar filter that blocks 99.9% of light. The darkest parts are the size of our entire planet! The sun's magnetic fields around sunspots can get wound up like a rubber band. When the tension snaps, the plasma ejection — if it's in the strike zone for Earth — can affect communications and power grids. But the chaos can also produce awe-inspiring auroras.
